Yes, South Africa's got talent!!!

Locnville

I'm sure that by now, Andrew and Brian have changed the point of view of many about the South African music industry. They have proven that behind the pretty faces are two hard working and dedicated muscians, who are passionate about and love what they do. They are but one example of the musical talent we have in this country.

Below are two more examples of both locally as well
internationally well known South african artists.

Goldfish

Dominic Peters and David Poole, aka Goldfish, who with a double bass, a saxophone and synths recorded their debut 'Caught in the loop', which launched them onto the international dance music scene.

Yoav

Yoav, a singer/songwriter born in Israel but raised in South Africa, released his debut album 'Charmed and Strange' in 2008.

Locnville - More than meets the eye

Locnville - More than meets the eye

Before I begin, I would like to emphasise the fact that I write from personal opinion alone. On occasion, some may not take well to or feel offended by what I write. I can assure you that, it is by no means my intention to judge or question the views or opinions of others, neither is it my intention to judge Andrew and Brian based on what I see. My aim is simply to explore myself, the world around me and in this case, Locnville from every possible angle.

It is clear that Andrew and Brian, despite the fact that they are twins, are not identical. I’ve always wondered why it is that some, myself included, find themselves more attracted to the one than to the other. As individuals, we are certainly entitled to our preferences , but are those preferences based solely on their physical appearance. Is it possible to see beyond that? Is there more to them than meets the eye? In other words, is what you see what you get?

I’ve always been one to ask questions, I rarely take things at face value. I seek to discover the answers to the one’s never asked, as well as to those many are afraid to. I look to explore things from every possible angle before formulating an opinion or presenting my point of view, whether it be of something or of someone.

It is said that, we are defined by our morals and values, by the standards we choose to live by and also by the decisions we make. We are judged not only by our words, but by our actions too.
I’m sure we’ve all, on more than one occasion, either heard or used the sayings “Never judge a book by its cover” and “First impressions last”. I’ve come to notice that, they in actual fact contradict each other. To put it in plain English, the one basically says judge and the other says don’t. There is no right or wrong. In the end it is a matter of principle, a matter of what you believe in.

When writing about Locnville, I always look to taking the unconventional approach, like I said, to explore things from a different angle in order to gain new perspective.
I have in my previous articles established that, Andrew and Brian have been defined as the fastest rising stars who took the South African music industry by storm. They have proven that, behind the pretty faces are two talented and dedicated musicians who are passionate about what they do.

The main focus thus far, because of the fact that they are twins, has been on what makes them different from each other in terms of likes, dislikes, preferences and so forth. What really interests me, is not what makes them different from each other, but what defines them as individuals. What is it that makes each of them who they truly are?

I believe that there is a difference between what someone is like and what defines them. To elaborate, one would use characteristics such as being shy, outgoing or eccentric, to name a few, in order to describe someone. In an attempt to define them, one would refer rather to their morals, values and the standards they choose to live by.
Unfortunately, in order to really know what defines someone, one would either need to have a personal relationship or have had spent a sufficient amount of time with them.

To conclude, there is certainly more to Andrew and Brian than meets the eye. In this case, some of what is hidden won’t be brought to the light. On the other hand, sometimes being left wondering may not be such a bad thing. It is after all what leaves us intrigued, curious and coming back for more.

Locnville - The Power of Passion

LocnvilleThe power of passion

When thinking about Locnville, the first word that comes to mind is passion. For some unknown reason, I have always been both drawn to as well as intrigued by the word.

Passion can be described as the driving force behind working towards and achieving your goals. Although, in order to do so, one cannot rely on passion alone. Factors such as hard work, dedication, determination and perseverance play an intricate role in attaining them. I’ve so often heard the words, “It’s always been a dream of mine to.....”, but without the above, dreams remain just that, dreams. They will, so to say, become ‘pipe dreams’ and never a reality.

When looking upon someone who has achieved their goals, it is most common to see others either motivated and inspired by their achievements or envious of them. It is so easy to become complacent, leading to dissatisfaction with what is.

I believe that we are all born to serve a purpose, born with a reason for being. Instilled within us is the need to discover and explore what it is that we are most passionate about. We strive towards reaching our dreams, searching for personal fulfilment, in the hopes of bettering our own lives or in some cases making a difference in the lives of others.

I only recently discovered the power behind passion. It lies in the fact that, it has the ability to ignite that of one persons through another’s. You are by no means limited to having only one passion in life. Exploring the various things you are passionate about can open doors, create opportunities and pave the way for you to attain your goals and realise your dreams.

I admire Andrew and Brian for many reasons, one of them being their ‘will to make it to the top’, but most importantly for the passion they display. They are examples of what you can achieve through combining what you are passionate about with the necessary factors such as hard work, dedication, determination and so forth.

Locnville - Born to perform

Locnville - Born to perform

When it comes to writing about Locnville, my aim is to explore what never has been, to bring to the light that which is hidden and to discover the answers to the never been asked questions. Just when I think there is nothing more about Andrew and Brian to be uncovered, that my passion for their music as well as my appreciation for them as artists cannot possibly increase, I am proven wrong.

I was recently asked to give reason as to why I enjoy attending their performances. I’d like to start off by saying that, in my opinion, a successful performance is based upon three things. Firstly, on how well the artist interacts with the audience as well as with the rest of the group or band, secondly, on stage presence and lastly, on whether or not the artist has the ability to perform live.

The artist should be able to captivate the audience, to in a sense ‘hold the audience in their palm of their hand’. Their passion as well as the love they have for what they do should be visible. There should be a connection between the artist and their music, as this in turn creates and ensures a connection between the artist and the audience.

Anyone can stand on stage with mic in hand and sing, but I see no point to producing the music without being able to perform it live. After all, a successful live performance plays an important role in being able to draw a crowd.

Andrew and Brian have thus far been, and I’m sure they will continue to be, successful in doing all of the above. When they perform the stage becomes their home, it is as if performing is what they were born to do.

Locnville - Behind the pretty faces

Locnville - Behind the pretty faces

In my opinion there is a lot more to Andrew and Brian what appears to be. Sure, those deep voices, blue eyes and dimples that can make any girls heart skip a beat might be a prominent feature but along with that, it is clear that they are also two hardworking and dedicated musicians who are passionate about and love what they do. I am and will always be a Villen. I’ll continue to stare at their pictures, buy the magazines and even go a little crazy, okay I’ll admit, perhaps more than a little crazy at their performances, but now I’d like to pose the question ‘What is behind the pretty faces?’

I would like to know what happens off stage, behind the scenes and out of the public eye. If I was given the opportunity, I’d like to walk a day in their shoes, to spend time with them, not as Locnville but as Andrew and Brian. I’d pose the never been asked questions such as, ‘What is life like outside of Locnville?’

Well, we already know where they grew up, where it all started, who likes what and we even know who lost his virginity first. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly do not want to pry into their personal lives. Just like you and I they have all the right in the world to a private life and who am I to want to deny them that. My main objective is to get to know them better as artists.

If I was ever asked to conduct an interview with them, I would pose questions such as, what do they think defines an artist? How do they define themselves as artists? I think that a lot of their passion for what they do is depicted in their lyrics and because of that I’d like to know where the inspiration for those lyrics comes from. Do they write from a certain place within? Places such as pain or out of personal experiences. How do they decide on which or whose lyrics to use or do they write together?

I would love to sit in with them on the production and recording of a song. I didn’t realize how much work goes into production until about a week ago when my brother and I were messing around on his keyboard. I was shocked to discover that the melody that we hear or sing is sometimes made up of more than one sound. Who knew? There are the bass and other effects that need to be added, I’m getting dizzy just thinking about it, but I’m still in ‘training’ as my brother refers to it and absolutely loving it! There is definitely so much more to learn and to be understood. This is what makes the process so intriguing, the fact there is so much more to it than meets the eye, or in this case, the ear.

Over the past few weeks I have come to see them less as Locnville and more as Andrew and Brian Chaplin, as artists and musicians. In all fairness to them, I believe they deserve to be looked upon in this way, to be shown off in this light.
